Canyon Ranch is an experience-based luxury wellness resort that curates transformative experiences focused on healing, rejuvenation, and personal growth. With multiple luxury destinations across the U.S., the brand is built around one thing: experience. Every stay is curated, every treatment personalized, and every touchpoint is designed to nourish the body and mind.

However, the brand juggled too many disconnected systems across its six U.S. locations. Each operation ran on its own systems using separate tools, including bookings, schedules, content, and more, making consistency a constant challenge. Manual syncing between platforms often led to delays and data mismatches, and the team had limited flexibility in how they presented their wellness offerings online. In total, more than 50 platforms powered their operations to solve for different services. One service change could trigger a chain of actions across systems.

And so, Canyon Ranch’s CPO envisioned something different. Something flexible, future-proof, and easy for the team to manage everything in one place. What if the entire system could be synced through Shopify as the core engine powering its entire operation? He saw potential where most wouldn’t.

It was a challenge most would hesitate to take on. But to us, it was the next step in evolving how we deliver experiences. All they needed was the right solution to bring their vision to life. It was a challenge that required a whole new approach to what Shopify could bring.

Canyon Ranch wanted to centralize every part of the experience, using Shopify as a platform not typically used for this kind of complexity. Still, with the right approach, it could be molded into the central hub for the entire enterprise.

So, we built a custom Shopify app, Service Merchandising Integration, engineered to handle the server, backend, and database, all under one platform. Built with Node.js and React, backed by Cosmos DB, this app works alongside Shopify, syncing with other platforms like Hygraph and Book4Time. Now, staff across all locations can manage services, events, immersions, design experience, day packages, and retail operations from one place. Everything—bookings, content, payments, media, and POS, flows through it now.

Let's say the spa manager in Tucson wants to add a new 80-minute deep tissue massage. They enter the service name, pricing, description, and schedule just once through the app. That data is stored centrally in Cosmos DB and pushed into Shopify, which acts as the source of truth. APIs then ensure this information is automatically reflected across their frontend site and internal systems.

For example, if a guest opts for a personalized experience, staff can use the app to build this custom pathway, assigning service categories, durations, and scheduling rules. Our app handles the logic, and Shopify renders it dynamically for the guest, making it feel both premium and personal.

Modules that handle daily recurring activities run on our system. Admins schedule it once, and the system auto-generates daily sessions across all touchpoints, resort's internal operations, customer portals, and printed schedules gets pulled from this same core, reducing duplication and boosting consistency. It's simple to manage, even at scale.

Then, there are multi-day experiences that combine lodging, meals, and services. These complex packages used to take hours to configure manually. Now, with our app, staff can build it modularly, assign core and elective services, set availability, and launch across all channels, with Shopify tracking everything in the backend.

When a guest books a spa massage behind the system, the booking is instantly synced with Shopify Plus through smart APIs, data being fetched from one location, updating availability and schedules in real-time, all without lifting a finger into different platforms.

What used to be handled through 50+ tools across different locations is now streamlined and, surprisingly, more cost-effective. By moving away from heavy, disjointed enterprise platforms to a custom Shopify Plus, they've cut operational complexity while boosting performance. With that, data flows smoothly across all the locations, with room to expand, ensuring every service stays perfectly coordinated. Canyon Ranch is finally able to centralize operations that were previously decentralized.

Using Shopify Plus proved to be a smoother and more affordable solution than other setups relying on multiple platforms.
