Shopify Multi Language Store

A store available in multiple languages can help you reach more customers globally.

Does Shopify support multiple languages?

Duh, Shopify allows you to change the language of your admin panel as well as translate your store’s content into different languages.

Making it easier for global customers to understand your products and leading to more sales.

How To Change The Language Of Your Shopify Admin?

The default language is set to English when you first begin using Shopify.

However, Shopify offers around 21 languages and plans to add more in the future. You or your team member might want to change the Shopify admin language for personal use.

Fortunately, this is possible in straightforward steps and won’t affect the language displayed to your customers on your storefront. Changing your account language only affects the language shown in your Shopify admin.

How? In your Shopify admin;

  • Click on your Profile or Account Username at the top right corner.
  • Select Manage Account from the menu.
  • In the account settings, find the Preferred Language section.
  • You will see a list of available languages.
  • Choose your Preferred Language from the drop-down menu.
  • After selecting the language, Save it to apply the changes.

But what if you’ve got an international team working with you?

Well, there’s nothing to fret about. Each team member can independently follow these steps to set their preferred language for the Shopify admin interface. This customization ensures that everyone on the team can work comfortably in their preferred language.

After setting the language for the admin area, you can also change the language for your store’s visitors.

How To Change The Default Language On Your Shopify Store?

You can change the main language that your store uses.

This language will be shown in your Shopify admin, at checkout, and in your store’s theme.

How can I do that?

  • Log in to your Shopify admin panel.
  • In your Shopify admin, click on Settings.
  • Choose Languages from the settings menu.
  • In the Published Languages section, find your current default language and click Change Default next to it.
  • Select the new language you want from the menu.
  • Click Save to apply the new default language.

Now, your store’s default language has been updated.

Suppose you want to use the previous default language as a secondary language. In that case, you must add it back from the Settings itself.

You can also activate multiple languages on your storefront, which allows customers to shop more efficiently in their native language.

Why Should You Sell In Multiple Languages In Your Store?

  • Offering multiple languages makes them accessible to a broader audience—letting you enter new markets more effectively by appealing to local customers in their native language.
  • You make your customers comfortable in their preferred language. If they can easily understand product descriptions, menus, and checkout processes, they are more likely to stay on your site, trust you, and make purchases.
  • It reduces misunderstandings and hesitations during purchase, thereby decreasing cart abandonment rates.
  • Translating your store content can help improve your search engine rankings in different languages, making it easier for local customers to find your store through search engines.
  • You can add relevant keywords in different languages, improving visibility and driving organic traffic.
  • Many competitors do not offer multilingual options. If you do, you can differentiate your store and attract customers who prefer shopping in their native language.
  • This one-of-a-kind experience can help build stronger relationships with your customers, with room for loyalty and repeat business.
  • Keeping non-English speaking customers one of your priorities, you can increase sales and revenue from international markets.

Are you convinced enough?

You might have this question in mind—how to add another language to Shopify stores?

How To Add Multiple Languages To Your Shopify Store?

In your Shopify admin, you can activate multiple languages, which will create separate URLs for each translated version of your content. When customers visit these URLs, your store will automatically display the translated content if it exists.

Shopify Multi Languages

Before moving forward with the steps, you should know the compatibility.
To sell in multiple languages, you should ensure;

  • Make sure your store can support multiple languages.
  • Your store is on the Basic Shopify plan or higher. Except for the Shopify Starter Plan (Shopify Lite), all Shopify plans allow you to have up to 20 languages from a single store.
  • All free Shopify themes are compatible with selling in multiple languages, and your active theme does support various languages. If you’re using third-party themes, you should contact the developers to check compatibility.
  • Your theme has a language selector, almost all themes (paid + free) do. But you can add one using Shopify’s Geolocation App if it doesn’t.
  • [ The geolocation apps are used to auto change the language and currency based on the user’s location. On December 1st, 2024, Shopify’s Geolocation app will no longer be available]
  • Have your translations ready, or install a translation app. You can use the Shopify Translate & Adapt or a compatible third-party translation app.
  • Alternatively, you can import translations directly into Shopify.

To add a new language,

  • From your Shopify admin, go to Settings and then select Languages.
  • Choose a language from the drop-down menu and click Add.
  • Select an Active Market to add your language to.
  • Use the Translate & Adapt app or another translation app from the Shopify App Store to import your translations.
  • Click Preview to see how the different languages look in your store.
  • Go to Language under Unpublished Languages and click Publish.
  • Click Save to make it available to customers.

Some third-party apps may not support multiple languages.
Check with the App Developers to confirm if their apps can handle multiple languages.

Selling in multiple languages means each translated page will have a unique URL with the language code added, as mentioned above.

For example, if your main domain is example.com and you add French (fr) and German (de), your URLs will become example.com/fr and example.com/de.

Shopify also allows you to use different domains for different languages using the international domains feature in Shopify Markets. URL slugs can be translated manually using translation apps or exporting/importing a CSV file.

But, but, but, there are also some limitations of selling in Multiple Languages like;

  • Only compatible third-party translation apps are supported.
  • Tags (e.g., product tags, article tags) cannot be translated.
  • URL slugs can be translated, but the base word (like /products/) cannot.
  • Customization of URL slugs for specific markets is not supported.
  • Ensure your theme supports right-to-left layouts for languages written from right to left (e.g., Hebrew, Arabic).

As we mentioned, you’ll need to have your translations ready or use a translation app like Shopify Translate & Adapt or any third-party apps from the Shopify App Store. So, let’s look at some Translation apps our developers recommend using.
